How to Set Up the 32 mm Guide Camera

To get your guiding system focused in before you’re out under clear skies,Apertura’s isolated the prime positioning for your guide scope’s focuser andcamera! While you likely will need to fine tune these specifications based onyour exact gear and local conditions, by following along with this simpleguide you’ll be off to an excellent start!

Begin by loosening the guide scope ring thumbscrews and sliding the tubeforward, almost as far forward as it can move with the 1.25″ camera holderinstalled, then re-tighten the thumbscrews. Now loosen focus locking ring(coin-edge ring just behind the front section of the guide scope) until itcontacts the guide scope ring. Twist the front section of the guide scope tothread it in or out of the main body. Measuring between the front section andthe focus locking ring, adjust until you have the correct ObjectiveDistance from the graphic below. Then, without touching the objective andadjusting its distance, tighten the focus locking ring down until it contactsthe front section and locks it in place.

Next loosen the 1.25″ camera connection ring. If you have a standard or”puck-style” cameras, attach the 1.25″ nosepiece included with most camerasand fully insert this into the 1.25″ holder. If you’re using a mini stylecamera, install the 1.25″ extension and then insert the camera until there is12 mm of space between the 1.25″ holder and the beginning of the main housingof the camera as shown in the graphic. Once your camera is inserted, tightendown the rear coin-edge ring to lock your camera in place. You’ll now be allset for only minor adjustments out in the field!

  • “I bought the Apertura 32 mm guidescope to pair with my Apertura 60EDR, and have to say it has been a great match for that scope! This accommodates my ‘puck-style’ guide camera well; with the nosepiece attached, I just slide this until stars are in rough focus, then lock it down and fine focus with the helical focusing ring. All the hardware you need to mount this within a findershoe comes in the box, and the digital manual helps you get the camera set up quickly. Though it wasn’t the deciding factor for me, I do like that this comes in a number of colors so you can keep a cohesive look within your imaging rig. While this lives on my 60EDR most of the time, I have also used it for 6” f/4 Newtonians as well and had great success there too. All in all, if you’re looking for a small guidescope this is a good pick!”
